A New Wave of Digital Transformation in the Retail Industry

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the retail sector's shift toward Digital Transformation.

A New Wave of Digital Transformation in the Retail Industry

Amid rapid e-commerce growth, traditional competitive advantages for retail chains are diminishing as consumers increasingly choose to interact across multiple channels. The key differentiator today lies in delivering convenience and seamless, integrated shopping experiences across every touchpoint. To achieve this, retailers must evolve their business strategies and build greater operational adaptability.

Industry estimates project that online sales will account for over 25% of total retail sales over the next five years. Customers demand fast, effortless, and omni-channel interactions. For them, the line between digital and physical shopping has blurred, placing pressure on retailers that historically operated online and offline channels in silos to now integrate them into a seamless experience.

Digital Retail

Currently, "new entrants with superior digital offerings and retailers delivering an integrated customer experience (CX) are capturing the majority of growth, putting profit margins and service standards under pressure for incumbent retailers," according to consulting firm McKinsey.

Traditional marketing channels and incentives are no longer enough to capture market share. Retailers must adopt a customer-centric approach and leverage consumer data to identify new opportunities.

Industry experts refer to this shift as a second wave of digital transformation in retail, driven by evolving consumer habits. In fact, a study revealed that 72% of consumers say their preferred channel for communicating with a business varies depending on the context. Furthermore, 68% stated that a single negative customer service experience would reduce their brand loyalty.

Mobile payments and shopping applications have become standard features in today's omni-channel retail landscape. Research indicates that mobile Point of Sale (mPOS) is the most widely adopted in-store digital transformation technology—with 20% of retail chains deploying mobile checkout functionality and more than half of shoppers expressing interest in using it.

Emerging Technologies

During the pandemic, technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) gained significant traction among retailers, particularly in developed markets. Specialized chains—across fashion, cosmetics, and home furnishings—launched virtual try-on and staging features, allowing customers to preview how products look on them or inside their homes before committing to a purchase.

Looking ahead, retail shopping will become increasingly personalized, powered by innovative technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, VR, AR, and advanced data analytics.
